A Family Farm and Ranch Organization

Representing the independent agricultural producer for 100 years, Rocky Mountain Farmers Union (RMFU), a grassroots organization, was founded in 1907. Since that time, RMFU has served the interests of independent family farmers and ranchers throughout Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. RMFU has a proud history and a promising future!

While specific programs and approaches to problem solving have changed over the years, unchanged is the organization’s focus on improving the well-being of family producers and their communities through legislation, cooperation and education.

RMFU’s Educational and Charitable Foundation, founded in 1996, has opened the door for many programs, such as the Cooperative Development Center; campaigns such as ‘Buy Fresh, Buy Local’; and seminars and conferences on renewable energy.

Rocky Mountain Farmers Union believes that stable farm and ranch families are the foundation of healthy rural communities. Healthy rural communities bolster the entire U.S. economy and provide the nation with a steady, wholesome, local food supply. RMFU’s mission statement reflects the importance of these issues:

Rocky Mountain Farmers Union is a progressive, grassroots organization dedicated to achieving profitability for family farmers and ranchers; promoting stewardship of land and water resources; delivering safe, healthy food to consumers; strengthening rural communities through education, legislation and cooperation; and, being the voice for family agriculture and rural communities.

RMFU is headquartered in Greenwood Village, Colo. An elected board of directors, representing districts throughout the three states, governs the grassroots organization.

The parent organization, National Farmers Union, provides a powerful voice for independent producers across the United States. Through RMFU’s affiliation, members have the opportunity to participate in national conferences, workshops and grassroots lobbying in Washington, D.C.

Rocky Mountain Farmers Union rests with the individual identifying problems, as well as solutions. With the support of the farm organization, problem solving becomes a coooperative effort and thus more efficient and effective. Cooperative solutions not only return money to the bottom-line but also increase quality of life. Renewable energy is on the forefront of present efforts.

As a family organization, there are activities and educational opportunities available for all ages, from toddlers to senior citizens. Multi-generational involvement is encouraged. The organization melds the value of experience with the importance of developing young leaders.

Standing firmly behind family producers and rural communities for a century now, RMFU is poised to continue to do battle for the independent producer for the next century. Local and national issues will be addressed with the well-honed tools of legislative, cooperative and educational activity.
