Your journey begins in the early spring as you meet your cohort—the colleagues who will become your lifelong network. This session is a deep dive into the RMFU identity: our staff, our specialized insurance programs, and our core mission. But we don’t just stay in the classroom. You will put your new knowledge to immediate use at the Colorado Legislative Drive-In. Walking the halls of the State Capitol, you’ll meet with board members and legislators, getting your first taste of what it means to be a voice for your community.
In the heat of summer, the Fellows hit the road. We travel across our tri-state region of Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico to see the diversity of agriculture firsthand. From high-tech production facilities and historic cooperatives to the innovative world of agritourism, this session is about seeing how “Cooperation” works on the ground. It’s a time for field-side conversations, making new friends over local food, and understanding the unique challenges of rural life across state lines.
In September, the Fellows takes the national stage. You will join hundreds of Farmers Union members from across the country in our nation’s capital. After perfecting your elevator pitch, you will head to Capitol Hill and the USDA to meet face-to-face with the policymakers who shape the Farm Bill. This is where “Legislation” becomes personal. Between meetings, you’ll explore the historic sights of D.C., cementing your role as a national advocate for family farmers and ranchers.
(November – Location Varies)
Your Fellows year culminates at the RMFU Annual Convention, but your work begins at home. After attending your local County Chapter Convention meeting and being elected as a delegate, you arrive at the RMFU Annual Convention ready to lead. You will participate in the policy-making process, vote on board nominations, and celebrate the year’s achievements at the Harvest Moon Gala. Many Fellows even choose to take the next step by running for a seat as a National Convention delegate.
Leadership doesn’t take a break. Throughout the year, Fellows stay connected through:
