Grassroots Solutions for Groundwater Sharing

How can New Mexico conserve declining groundwater supplies while keeping agriculture viable? Gretel Follingstad of Environmental Defense Fund will host a conversation with LaDonna Clayton of the Ogallala Land & Water Conservancy and Aron Balok of the Pecos Valley Artesian Conservancy District about practical, locally driven approaches already being tested in New Mexico.

Drawing on work ranging from voluntary water-right leases and conservation easements to well metering, agricultural water-use limits, and land-retirement programs, they will explore strategies for sharing scarce groundwater while supporting producers, rural communities, and a long-term agricultural future.

The presentation will be followed by time for questions and community discussion.

This event is hosted by the Northern New Mexico Farmers Union Chapter and is open to farmers, ranchers, acequia members, agricultural water users, community leaders, and anyone interested in the future of water and agriculture in New Mexico.
