Today, I find myself sitting down to reflect on the past year of the farm and agricultural season. As a first-generation farmer welcomed into the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union family about eight years ago, I’ve experienced a journey of growth, challenges, and unwavering dedication to our way of life.
Operating my 45-acre business has been no easy feat. It’s been a constant struggle, with moments where I’ve put my family’s stability at risk. Yet, I’ve volunteered my time abundantly, serving on boards and committees, knowing that someone has to step up to lead. If not me, then who?
I often wonder how to inspire others to join this life, to draw them to not just our organization, but to the very essence of farming and ranching. Perhaps the answer lies in living it, breathing it, day in and day out, just as I have for at least 12 to 14 hours daily for years. Even in the struggle, I rise each morning, driven by the knowledge of how vital this work is. It’s for myself, my goals, and for the generations to come, so they may have a legacy to build upon.
In the last four years, much has changed, yet less than 2% of the population remains willing to put in the grit and grind necessary to preserve our lands. When I think of “invention,” I feel joy, knowing I toil daily for a future worth having.
To all current and future members of the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, I urge you to join this movement. Find your voice, your empowerment, and know you’ll be supported by an organization that lifts you up. We must break bread together, hear each other out, even when views differ. That’s how we’ll move forward.
County and state conventions are crucial, especially in our field. We’re the sole advocates for our work. Our roles extend beyond stewarding the land; we must also speak out for ourselves, expressing what works and what doesn’t, what support we need. United, we’ll fight for our future. Attending conventions, representing your region and community, is vital. We are the voice, the future, and we need your participation to thrive.
So, I extend an invitation to all. If a fire stirs within you, come create policy that changes your world. Join the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, participate, and let’s shape a brighter future together. I hope to see you there.
Share your voice and help shape the future of farming and ranching in the Rocky Mountain region.
