Fehringers are RMFU Farm Family of the Year

FFOYDonald and Carolyn Fehringer are the 2014 Farm Family of the Year. The Fehringers are among the most actively involved families in Rocky Mountain Farmers Union.
Don was born in Nebraska in 1924. In 1929 his family moved to Peetz, Colo., where Don attended and graduated from Peetz school system.  While growing up Donald went through the Farmers Union Youth program and was one of the first Torchbearer recipients. He passed away in February of last year.
Carolyn Westphalen was born in born in 1927 in Nebraska, where she grew up. After high school graduation she went to nursing school in Denver and became a registered nurse.
Donald and Carolyn met at a community Christmas dance and were married in June of 1949. They made their home northwest of Peetz, where they started farming and their family.  Their children, Randy, Jim, LuAnne, and Kevin, were all active in the youth program and each one earned his or her Torchbearers award. Grandchildren Darrick, Justin, Sean, Michelle, Brad and Blair are now going through the youth program and camps. Donald and Carolyn together had more than 90 years of service as Farmers Union youth leaders.
Donald sold Farmers Union Insurance for 45 years and Carolyn was his secretary the entire time.  They were also involved at the local and county level, holding many offices, going to conventions, fly-ins and drive-ins.
Don was on the Peetz telephone board, Peetz fire district board, Soil Conservation board, Milk Producers Board, and CSU Advisory board.
He received the Logan County Outstanding Farmer Award and was the runner up at the State Level. Carolyn is active in her church, and is a member of the Farm Women’s Garden Club She is still involved with Logan County Farmers Union, the Senior Citizens “meet and eat” program in Peetz, and a member of the Northeast Colorado Council on Aging.
