Rio Grande Farm Park

Rio Grande Farm Park

The Rio Grande Farm Park is a 38-acre site in Alamosa, Colorado that offers various farming, educational, and recreational opportunities. The Farm Park offers participants educational programming while also helping local farmers connect to markets. Rio Grande Farm Park is a proving ground for the mission of the San Luis Valley Local Foods Coalition to build a more equitable local food system.

Historically, the Farm Park has been a place for people to grow food for their families, and it was transformed to help new and beginning farmers obtain economic development opportunities. Specific programs include commercial farming, community gardens, the Mercadillo Farmers Market, educational workshops, the Rising Stewards summer internship for high schoolers, and volunteer workdays.

In 2019, out of the Farm Park’s early commercial farming program, participants developed the Rio Grande Organic Growers Cooperative. The cooperative is independent and self- governing. It is also growing, earning their own funds and able to purchase their own tools. They are also exploring the idea of offering their own CSA share and supporting the Rio Grande Farm Park in building a commercial kitchen and processing space.
