RMFU Members Meet with Washington Leaders

Denver, September 18, 2007 — Rocky Mountain Farmers Union members are in Washington, D.C., this week to meet with federal legislators and urge them to support development of a 2007 farm bill that will sustain rural economies and ensure our nation’s security.

Development of renewable energy, fair international trade agreements, and healthy food policies will be on the agenda as farm and ranch families from the region visit senators and congressional representatives as well as administration officials from the USDA, including Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns. They will also visit the FDA, the Department of Education, and the Justice Department.

“Rural America holds the key to food and fuel security in a global economy,” RMFU President Kent Peppler said. Peppler, who accompanied the group to Washington, is a Mead, Colo., farmer. “Renewable energy and our food supply depend on wise use of our rural lands. Our members represent lifetimes of experience and innovation. We hope our voices can bring improvement to the farm bill.”
